Captain Jacob Milligan took as his first wife Margaret Bennett, daughter of John Bennett and Margaret Swinton Bennett.  The Bennett's were descended from Thomas Bennett (b. 1681 England) and Anne Givens.   She was the aunt to the Governor of SC, Thomas Bennett, Jr.

Margaret Bennett Milligan, wife of Captain Jacob Milligan, was the daughter of John Bennett [02 Jan 1727/28 - died before. Nov 1779] and wife Margaret Swinton [1729-09 Nov 1807].  They lived at Christ Church Parish in the Charleston SC area.

See more on the SWINTON page

Margaret was the niece of Thomas Bennett Sr. and Anna Hayes Warnock his wife.

Anna Hayes Warnock is possibly a descendant of Sir Francis DRAKE, noted explorer and Admiral.

One of the 11 children born to Thomas Bennett, Sr and Anna Hayes Warnock is Thomas Bennett, Jr. (1781-1863), Governor of SC from 1820-1822.  (He served several political offices prior to becoming governor.)  The town of Bennettsville, SC is named for him, although we cannot find any record that he lived there.    A partner of his father in the lumbar and rice mill business, like him, Gov. Bennett was also an architect, and later built the handsome brick rice mill which still stands at the east end of Wentworth St., Charleston. His beautiful home, which he named Bennettsville, now surrounded by the city, is still in excellent preservation on Lucas St. in Charleston. Another home is reported to be the Gov. Thomas Bennett House at 69 St.. Berre Street, Charleston The house was built by Thomas BENNETT, Jr.,    The house was built in 1825 and it originally looked over the BENNETT rice plantation, mill ponds and saw mill.

From Genforum:  Bennett 3959 2-29-2000
I am descended from their son, Thomas Bennett, Sr. and I have the following information:

The parents of Thomas Bennett, Sr., (John Bennett and Margaret Swinton Bennett) settled in Bermuda and the island of Jamaica from whence they settled in Georgia where Thomas was born 11 Feb. 1754. He died the 16th or 17th of Feb 1814 in Charleston, SC. He had a sister, Sarah, who married a Wilkinson of SC and a sister named Mary who married George Petrie. Thomas married Anna Hayes Warnock on the 4th or 9th of June 1774 at St. Thomas Parish, SC, by the Reverend Alexander Garden.

Thomas Bennett Sr., wife was Anna Hayes Warnock, a granddaughter of Sir Andrews Warnock of Scotland (b. 1673) and daughter of Joseph Warnock and Mary Hayes Warnock of St. Thomas Parish, Berkley SC. Her parents settled in St. Thomas Parish, SC, where Anna Hayes was born in December of 1752. She died June 16, 1830 in Charleston, SC. Anna Hayes had a sister, Sarah Margaret Warnock, who married John Singletary, who was the son of Benjamin Singletary and Hannah Darby. NOTE: one of Sarah and John Singletary's three daughters married a William Bennett (her 2nd husband).

The children of Thomas Bennett, Sr. and Anna Hayes Warnock are as follows: Anna Claudia, Elias Simmons, Isaac Stockton Keith, Joseph, William Swinton, Thomas (Governor of SC), Hayes, Sarah and John Singletary Bennett.

John Singletary Bennett's second wife was Martha Hibben, the daughter of James Hibben (b. 29 Oct 1766; d. 4 Jan 1836) and Sarah Margaret Wells (b. 12 Oct 1771; d. 26 July 1827). John and Martha were married May 7, 1818, by the Reverend A. W. Leland and both are buried in the Baptist graveyard in Carlowville, Alabama in Dallas County. John Singletary was born 27 Nov 1783 and died 10 Sept 1862. Martha was born 16 Oct 1801 or 1802 at Christ Church Parish, SC and died Feb 7, 1868.

The parents of James Hibben are Andrew Hibben from the county of Kent, England, who came to this country with Whitfield, the great evangelist. Andrew first settled in Charleston, where his first wife died childless. He then married Elizabeth Daniel Barksdale of Christ Church Parish, the daughter of George Barksdale and the widow of John S. Wingood. She died 11 March 1781 at Christ Church Parish. 2-1/2 months later, Andrew Hibben married Mary Smith, a widow, on the 27th of May 1781. He died 2 Sept 1784.

I am searching for anyone who ties into this family tree who can take these families further back and fill in some dates and locations. Thanks! Fredreica (speyer@bellsouth.net)
